'Amazing' Talent at Sing50 Auditions

PRIMARY 5 pupil Joash Chen wants to play the violin at the Sing50 mega concert because he wants “to be part of the orchestra for this Singapore celebration, on a bigger stage than I’ve been on”.

The mega Sing50 concert, to be held on Aug 7 at the National Stadium, will feature a 100-strong orchestra, 1,000-strong choir, 50 pianists and 100 rappers. Joash, 11, who started playing in the Singapore National Youth Sinfonia orchestra last year, was accompanied by his father, MrJoshua Chen, a 43-year-old IT director in the healthcare industry, who was there to support the youngest of his three children at the audition last Saturday.

Joash, who started playing the violin when he was four years old, was one of about 60 people at the Sing50 auditions at the SPH Media Centre in Genting Lane over the weekend.

Last Saturday, auditions were held for string instruments such as the violin, viola and cello, while auditions for non-string instruments such as the clarinet and harp, were held yesterday. The age range for those who signed up for the auditions is from seven to 56 years. The results of the auditions will be made known at the end ofthe month.

One of the three judges at the auditions last Saturday, Associate Professor Chan Tze Law, who is also an associate director at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, noted that “amazing” talent was displayed.

He added: “We’re also interested in people who perhaps have always been looking for such an opportunity, to perform at a big event such as Sing50. We have that opportunity to make someone’s dream come true in this regard.”

Sing50 celebrates music and songs composed, performed or popularised by Singapore artists over the past five decades. Jointly organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times, the concert is produced by non-profit arts and culture organisation The Rice Company.
