Paul Anka a surprise treat at UOB dinner
Taylor Swift made headlines when she performed in Singapore recently, but unbeknownst to many, there was another superstar in town this week.
Paul Anka may not be a recognisable name to most Swifties, which are what fans of Swift are called, but the legendary pop and jazz star was certainly known to the guests at United Overseas Bank's 80th anniversary dinner on Thursday night.
Anka, known for hits such as Put Your Head On My Shoulder and Diana, was flown in as a surprise treat for the bank's employees and guests, who included the bank's biggest clients.
The singer arrived with a 10-piece band and a five-member crew. In addition to his own band members were five brass musicians and the 31-piece Metropolitan Festival Orchestra from Singapore.
It was an intimate performance for a glitzy evening, with Anka often leaving the stage to sing and dance among the audience.
He also belted out the crowd-pleaser My Way, which he wrote for Frank Sinatra, and then sang it a second time with the lyrics changed for UOB and Singapore:
"Three cheers for 80 years
The world reveres
The best in banking
Chairman E and UOB
It's you we're thanking
Tonight it seems so right
With great delight
The Singapore way
For all you do
This song's for you
Here's My Way
